Mammoet secures nuclear quality certification as reactor projects expand

Mammoet has achieved ISO 19443 certification for the nuclear energy supply chain, becoming what the heavy lift specialist says is the first engineered heavy lifting and transport service provider to secure the industry specific quality standard.

The certification strengthens Mammoet’s credentials for handling critical lifting, transport and installation scopes as governments and utilities pursue new nuclear generating capacity and next generation reactor programmes.

ISO 19443 was published in 2018 and applies to organisations supplying products or services considered important to nuclear safety. The standard builds on ISO 9001 requirements, with additional controls designed specifically for the nuclear energy supply chain.

Mammoet said preparations for certification took three years. The audit examined areas including corporate culture, operating processes, employee training, engineering and health and safety.

The certificate is being awarded by DNV France, according to Mammoet.

For project logistics providers, the requirements matter because nuclear construction involves more than simply moving exceptionally heavy equipment. Reactor vessels, steam generators and other critical components require transport and lifting procedures that fit within tightly controlled engineering, documentation and quality systems.

Mammoet already holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications and has worked on nuclear projects involving EDF, ITER, RWE, Framatome, Bruce Power and PreussenElektra.

The company has also been expanding its involvement in future reactor programmes. In 2025, Mammoet signed a memorandum of understanding with EDF covering construction technologies and methodologies intended to improve the efficiency of potential new nuclear projects in the Netherlands.

In March 2026, Mammoet joined Westinghouse and other supply chain companies in Washington to discuss deployment of AP1000 reactors in the United States.

Davide Andreani, managing director of Mammoet Europe Projects, said ISO 19443 had previously been used mainly by nuclear manufacturers.

“We are now the first company in the world, as a service provider in heavy lifting and transport, to become certified,” Andreani said.

The certification could become increasingly relevant as nuclear developers look toward modular construction, where larger sections of a plant are assembled away from their final position before being transported and lifted into place. That approach places heavy transport and lifting contractors deeper inside the nuclear construction supply chain and its quality assurance requirements.
