Maryland Port Administration Appoints Matt Wypyski as New Deputy Executive Director for Commercial Development

Maryland Port Administration (MPA) has brought on board a seasoned maritime industry leader, Matthew (Matt) Wypyski, as the new deputy executive director for commercial development. Wypyski, who comes with 33 years of experience in the international maritime sector, started his role earlier this month, where he will oversee all revenue activities for the MPA, including the critical departments of trade development, maritime commercial management, and strategic initiatives.

Wypyski’s extensive career spans a range of senior executive positions at major U.S. ports, marine terminal and stevedoring companies, and with major ocean carriers. This deep-rooted expertise is expected to bolster the Port of Baltimore’s ambitions as one of the most cargo-diverse ports in the country. According to MPA Executive Director Jonathan Daniels, “We are very fortunate to be able to add an individual of Matt’s background and experience at the Port of Baltimore. Matt is extremely well-respected in our industry and he will be playing a significant role in helping us grow our cargo and cruise businesses.”

The addition of Wypyski to the MPA marks a strategic move to enhance the port’s competitive position. He will play a pivotal role in advancing key projects like the Howard Street Tunnel Project, which aims to enable double-stacked container trains, a development expected to boost cargo volumes significantly and create thousands of jobs.

Wypyski joins an established leadership team at MPA, becoming the third deputy executive director alongside Brian Miller, who oversees operations and logistics, and Robert Munroe, who handles administration and environment. His immediate past role as chief operating officer at the Port of New Orleans, where he managed all operational aspects, including business development, tenant services, and customer relations, positions him well for his new role in Baltimore.

Reflecting on his new role, Wypyski expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the port’s future success. “I’m excited to be working alongside a very strong leadership group at the Maryland Port Administration and working at the Port of Baltimore, which has such a long and successful history and strong current business portfolio,” he said.

Before his tenure in New Orleans, Wypyski served for 13 years as deputy executive director and chief operating officer at the Mississippi State Port Authority in Gulfport. There, he played a critical role in managing a $600 million expansion and improvement project funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, along with other significant port developments.

His earlier experience as executive vice president of terminal operations for Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in New Orleans and Houston involved overseeing terminals that handled more than 700,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) containers annually. This operational depth and leadership experience underscore the strategic advantages he brings to MPA in a highly competitive maritime landscape.
