Milestone: Van Oord’s Offshore Installation Vessel Boreas Successfully Launched

Van Oord, a prominent player in the offshore industry, celebrates a significant achievement as its new offshore installation vessel, Boreas, is successfully launched at the Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd. shipyard in China. This momentous occasion marks a pivotal step towards enhancing Van Oord’s capabilities in offshore wind energy projects, ushering in a new era of innovation and sustainability.

The Boreas boasts a dual fuel engine system capable of running on methanol, making it uniquely suited for the transport and installation of next-generation foundations and turbines at offshore wind farms. With commercial availability anticipated in 2025, the vessel promises to revolutionize offshore installation operations.

The launch of the Boreas posed significant logistical challenges due to its size and complexity. Employing the ‘skidding method,’ the vessel was safely maneuvered from the construction site to the quay before being skidded onto two pontoons. Subsequently, the pontoons were submerged in a controlled operation, allowing the Boreas to become afloat. As the vessel undergoes further enhancements, including the installation of the main crane and the extension of its jack-up legs, rigorous testing and sea trials will ensure optimal performance before its delivery to Van Oord.

Johan de Graaf, Project Manager Shipbuilding at Van Oord, expressed his appreciation for the collaborative effort involved in reaching this milestone, stating, “The launch of the Boreas is a major milestone for Van Oord. A big thanks to the project teams and all subcontractors and suppliers who worked with great commitment and dedication towards this crucial stage of the construction process.”

Designed to meet the evolving demands of the offshore wind industry, the Boreas embodies Van Oord’s commitment to sustainability and future-proofing. With dimensions measuring 175 meters in length and equipped with a crane boasting a 155-meter-high boom capable of lifting over 3,000 tonnes, the vessel is primed to handle the installation of next-generation 20 MW offshore wind turbines in waters up to 70 meters deep.

Setting a new standard for environmental responsibility, the Boreas is equipped with sustainable features, including the ability to run on methanol, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Additionally, advanced emissions control technology and a battery pack further enhance the vessel’s environmental performance, aligning with Van Oord’s commitment to driving the energy transition forward.

As Van Oord continues to lead the charge in sustainable offshore solutions, the successful launch of the Boreas underscores the company’s dedication to innovation, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
