Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Takes Ownership of New Luxury Cruise Ship “Mitsui Ocean Fuji,” Set for December Launch

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has officially announced the handover of the luxury cruise ship previously known as the Seabourn Odyssey, signaling a new chapter as it prepares to launch under the name “Mitsui Ocean Fuji.” The handover ceremony took place in Yokohama, with representatives from both MOL Cruise, Ltd., a subsidiary of MOL, and Seabourn Cruise Line Limited marking the occasion with speeches and a sense of reverence for the ship’s rich history.

The Seabourn Odyssey, operated by the U.S.-based Seabourn Cruise Line, has enjoyed nearly 15 years of voyages, establishing itself as a beloved name in luxury cruising since its maiden season in 2009. However, it’s now stepping into a fresh identity. As the Mitsui Ocean Fuji, the ship is set to re-enter service this December, boasting an all-suite configuration that aligns with the high standards of modern luxury cruising. This transformation reflects MOL’s ambitions to diversify its portfolio beyond the conventional commercial shipping sector and to strengthen its position in the cruise industry.

Captain Krasimir Radev, who served as Staff Captain during the Seabourn Odyssey’s inaugural season, joined Captain Kim Roger Karlsson, the first captain of the Mitsui Ocean Fuji, on stage during the handover event. Both captains shared their thoughts, celebrating the vessel’s enduring legacy and expressing optimism about its future journeys under the MOL Cruise banner. There was an evident mix of nostalgia and excitement as Captain Radev acknowledged the Odyssey’s long-standing contributions to the cruise world, while Captain Karlsson looked forward to helming the ship into a new era of luxury travel.

MOL’s move to expand its cruise business comes as part of its strategic vision outlined in the “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan introduced in March 2023. This initiative aims to create a more resilient business model for MOL by investing in sectors less prone to the fluctuations of the commercial shipping markets. The cruise industry, with its relatively stable demand, presents an attractive opportunity for long-term growth and profitability. The company’s intention to focus on this segment reflects a deliberate effort to build a more diversified revenue stream.

The Mitsui Ocean Fuji will be the first of what MOL envisions as a fleet of luxury vessels, as it seeks to enhance its corporate value and realize its broader vision. This approach marks a significant step for the MOL Group as it looks to balance its traditional strengths in shipping with new ventures in leisure cruising.

The decision to rebrand and relaunch the ship is seen as a strategic move to create a stronger brand identity within the cruise market. It’s a clear signal that MOL is serious about its intentions to establish itself as a leader in luxury cruising, and the Mitsui Ocean Fuji is poised to be the flagship of this endeavor.

The handover marks the beginning of an exciting new journey for the vessel, passengers, and the company alike, as the Mitsui Ocean Fuji prepares to set sail and carve out its place in the world of luxury cruising.
