Modulift spreader beams have successfully lifted the first EMU3000 new intercity express train in Taiwan, marking a significant milestone in the island’s rail infrastructure development. This impressive feat was accomplished by Nakamura Industry Co. Ltd., a Japan-based lifting gear supplier, in collaboration with their customer. The lift took place at Hualien Port in Taiwan, utilizing Modulift’s cutting-edge technology.
In a meticulously planned operation, two MOD® 34 spreader beams were deployed below the hook at a span of 3.5 meters. These beams provided four lifting points beneath the train, ensuring an even distribution of its weight. The configuration included drop links and shackles at each end of the beams, synthetic round slings below, and wire rope slings above. This setup allowed the safe and secure lifting of the train onto the vessel for its journey from Japan.
Upon reaching Taiwan, the spreader beams were disassembled and the same configuration was used to unload the train at its destination, where it will service the East Coast line. This delivery is part of an ongoing project by the Hitachi Group, which began in 2021. By the end of this year, all remaining EMU3000 trains are expected to be delivered and installed, totaling 50 12-car trains (600 cars in all). This upgrade is set to replace the 30-year-old 8-car trains currently in operation, significantly increasing passenger capacity and reducing travel time around the island to just six hours.
Nakamura Industry Co. Ltd., based in Osaka, holds a comprehensive stock of Modulift spreader beams ranging from 6t to 100t, ensuring quick delivery across Japan. They also supply various lifting products, including wire ropes, synthetic slings, hooks, and shackles.
Sumihide Haruta, Executive Officer and General Manager of Nakamura Industry Co., Ltd.’s Sales Division, praised the adaptability of Modulift spreader beams. “The Modulift spreader beams’ adaptable design allowed our customer to safely configure the lift for the EMU3000. These beams were transported with the train, facilitating easy disassembly, shipping, and reassembly before offloading.”
Sarah Spivey, Managing Director of Modulift, highlighted the practical benefits of their spreader beams. “Modulift spreader beams are portable, lightweight, and easy to transport and store. They proved to be the ideal lifting solution for safely transporting the train from Japan to Taiwan. We are pleased to be part of this important project in Taiwan, contributing to the enhancement of their rail infrastructure which is due for completion this year.”
The versatility and reliability of Modulift spreader beams make them a valuable asset for large-scale lifting projects. Their lightweight and modular design, along with DNV Type Approval for all standard beams ranging from 6t to 2000t, ensures they can be reused for multiple lifts, enhancing efficiency and safety in complex logistical operations.
