Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has officially inked a long-term charter agreement with a vessel operation management company financed by JERA Co., Inc. for a state-of-the-art LNG carrier. Scheduled for delivery in 2026 from Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje Shipyard in South Korea, this vessel will join MOL’s fleet to strengthen JERA’s LNG supply chain.
This latest deal marks the eighth such contract between MOL and JERA, further reinforcing their partnership. The new LNG carrier is designed with a 174,000m³ membrane-type tank and spans 290 meters in length, with a breadth of 45.8 meters. Once operational, it will play a pivotal role in ensuring the steady delivery of LNG—a cornerstone for stable energy supply.
JERA, established in 2015 as a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Company and Chubu Electric Power, has grown into a global energy leader. Its operations span the entire energy value chain, from upstream fuel procurement to power generation and sales. As the world’s largest LNG buyer by volume, JERA’s commitment to decarbonization and clean energy initiatives has positioned it as a key player in the energy transition. The company’s vision includes creating a digitalized clean energy platform that integrates renewable energy with low-emission thermal power, offering a blueprint for Asia and beyond.
MOL, on its part, continues to evolve its business portfolio under the “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan. The addition of this LNG carrier aligns with its strategy to expand its low-carbon shipping solutions while maintaining its position as the world’s largest LNG fleet operator. By focusing on lower GHG emissions during combustion compared to traditional fuels, MOL contributes to global decarbonization efforts. This aligns with its “Environmental Vision 2.2,” which targets net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
Beyond shipping, MOL leverages its extensive experience in developing broader social infrastructure and marine technologies. This latest charter aligns with the company’s commitment to offering value through safe transportation, environmental conservation, and continuous innovation in marine technology.
This strategic collaboration not only supports global energy needs but also underscores the joint commitment of JERA and MOL to fostering sustainable growth. Their combined expertise in energy and logistics ensures that the goals of stability, decarbonization, and innovation are well within reach, setting a new benchmark for partnerships in the maritime and energy sectors.
