Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has just announced a significant advancement in maritime technology. On July 10, the 63,896 DWT Ultramax bulk carrier, Green Winds, was completed at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., marking a milestone in the maritime industry. This vessel is the second in MOL’s fleet to be outfitted with the Wind Challenger, a hard sail wind power propulsion system, and it’s a notable achievement considering its potential to transform energy use in shipping.
The Green Winds is operated by MOL Drybulk Ltd., a subsidiary of MOL Group, and it represents a key part of the company’s broader environmental strategy. The Wind Challenger, developed in collaboration between MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding, harnesses wind energy using telescoping hard sails. This innovative technology is anticipated to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 7% to 16%, depending on various factors such as ship route and conditions.
