Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto addressed the 34th Maritime Nation Forum in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, showcasing MOL’s strategic initiatives toward achieving a decarbonized society. The forum, hosted by the Japan Maritime Center, gathered around 200 maritime professionals, including industry experts, government officials, and academics. The event served as a platform for discussions on the maritime industry’s transition to zero carbon.
In his speech, Hashimoto highlighted MOL’s ongoing projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and integrating renewable energy solutions. One of the key initiatives mentioned was the partnership with Hokutaku Co., Ltd., a leading wind power maintenance company based in Asahikawa. This alliance focuses on strengthening wind power infrastructure, which is vital to Japan’s renewable energy future.
Another notable project is MOL’s LNG-fueled ferry service, set to begin in early 2025, connecting Oarai and Tomakomai. This project underscores the company’s push for cleaner alternative fuels, as liquefied natural gas (LNG) presents a less carbon-intensive energy source. Hashimoto also discussed Daibiru’s redevelopment project around Sapporo Station’s south exit, an initiative MOL is actively supporting. This urban development project aligns with environmental goals by integrating sustainable construction practices.
MOL’s efforts go beyond transportation and infrastructure. The group is exploring biomethane production from animal manure in Hamanaka-cho, Hokkaido. By turning waste into energy, this project exemplifies the company’s commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions in various sectors.
The broader context of these initiatives lies in MOL’s long-term environmental strategy, “BLUE ACTION 2035.” This plan is anchored by the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as outlined in the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” As a leader in multimodal ocean shipping, MOL is positioning itself as a major player in the global decarbonization effort, working closely with both international markets and local communities.
This year’s forum revolved around the theme “Aiming for a Zero Carbon Society: Challenges of Decarbonization in the Maritime Industry.” Lectures and panel discussions explored new trends and technologies, and MOL’s role in these conversations highlighted its position at the forefront of innovation within the maritime sector.
