MOL President & CEO Hashimoto Welcomes New Employees at Company’s Entrance Ceremony

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) welcomed 69 new employees at its entrance ceremony in Tokyo, marking a pivotal moment for the company and its future. MOL President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto took the stage to address the new recruits—22 recent graduates destined for sea-based roles and 47 experienced professionals who will join the company’s land operations.

Hashimoto opened his speech with a warm welcome, acknowledging the company’s steady performance but underscoring the challenges that lie ahead. The global shipping and logistics industry is undergoing rapid transformation, and Hashimoto emphasized that MOL’s long-term success hinges on adapting to this changing environment. “For the MOL Group to continue to grow steadily, we need an appropriate business strategy,” he told the audience, laying out three key areas the company is focusing on: environmental responsiveness, global competitiveness, and business diversification.

At the heart of MOL’s strategy is its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company has set an ambitious target of net-zero emissions by 2050. In pursuit of this, MOL is transitioning its fleet away from heavy oil and towards alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and methanol. Hashimoto also highlighted MOL’s innovative “Wind Challenger” system, which uses hard sail wind power propulsion to further reduce emissions. “GHG reduction is an urgent task that requires expense, labor, and technological innovation,” Hashimoto stressed, noting that MOL is dedicated to overcoming these hurdles.

Hashimoto also outlined the company’s goal of building a globally competitive organization. Traditionally centered on Japan, MOL is now looking beyond its home market, targeting expansion into Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and South America. This global push is aimed at solidifying MOL’s standing as a truly international player in the shipping and logistics sectors.

In addition to expanding its shipping operations, MOL is diversifying its business portfolio to ensure stable growth. Hashimoto explained that the company will be increasing its focus on non-shipping ventures, such as offshore services, logistics, real estate, and the cruise industry. This shift is designed to balance growth with stability, allowing MOL to better navigate the volatile nature of the shipping industry.

Hashimoto’s message to the new employees was clear: their skills and expertise will play a crucial role in helping MOL achieve these ambitious goals. “It is the human capital of each and every one of you that will address these challenges,” he said, urging the new recruits to leverage their knowledge to drive the company forward. With a strong focus on innovation and global expansion, MOL is positioning itself to be a resilient player in a rapidly evolving industry.
