Monjasa Expands LNG Bunkering Operations in UAE with New Fleet

New developments in LNG bunkering are taking shape in the UAE, as Monjasa successfully carries out its first ship-to-ship (STS) operation with the LBV Green Zeebrugge and FSU Shandong Juniper.

The operation, which took place in the United Arab Emirates, marks a significant milestone for Monjasa as it expands its LNG supply capabilities. With increasing demand for cleaner marine fuel, the company is positioning itself to meet the needs of shipowners looking to comply with tightening emissions regulations.

“Following our first successful cruise line supplies in Dubai, the next step is to cover all UAE ports, where we see a demand for LNG bunkering,” said Casper Borgen, Trading Director for the Middle East & Africa.

The Green Zeebrugge, measuring 108 meters with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters, works alongside the larger Shandong Juniper, which spans 290 meters and holds 130,000 cubic meters of LNG. This dual-fleet approach offers both large-scale storage and flexible supply solutions, ensuring compatibility with various vessel types.

One of the key logistical challenges in LNG bunkering is that most terminals are designed to handle large gas carriers, limiting access for smaller tankers that serve end customers. The combination of a floating storage unit (FSU) and a supply vessel allows Monjasa to bridge this gap efficiently, delivering LNG where it is needed most.

In terms of environmental impact, LNG offers a 20% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional oil-based fuels. This makes it an attractive option for shipowners navigating compliance with regulations such as the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the annual Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).

As the LNG bunkering market in the Middle East continues to develop, Monjasa’s latest move signals its commitment to strengthening supply chains and supporting the shipping industry’s transition to lower-carbon fuel alternatives.
