MPA Welcomes NTU Maritime Students for European Industry Exposure

In a move to bridge academic learning with real-world industry experience, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) recently hosted 12 maritime students from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on an educational exchange in Europe. The students, currently pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Maritime Studies, are attending courses at Copenhagen Business School and BI Norwegian Business School as part of the program.

During their time abroad, the students were given the opportunity to immerse themselves in Europe’s bustling maritime sector through a series of field visits and networking opportunities. Under the guidance of Sin Yee Loh, MPA’s Regional Director (Europe) and Counsellor (Maritime), the group visited several pivotal maritime hubs. These included the Embassy of Belgium in Singapore and MPA’s Europe Regional Centre. They also explored the major European ports of Antwerp-Bruges and Rotterdam.

At the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the students toured PSA Belgium’s Noordzee Container Terminal, where they gained a hands-on understanding of the port’s operations and its critical role in connecting cargo flows across the continent. Antwerp and Rotterdam, being two of the largest ports in Europe, offered a comprehensive glimpse into the mechanics of the European logistics and breakbulk sectors, showing the students firsthand how maritime infrastructure supports global trade.

This initiative underscores the importance of fostering young talent and giving future maritime professionals the tools and knowledge to navigate the increasingly globalized industry. The exchange not only allowed students to gain insight into Europe’s dynamic maritime landscape but also positioned them to network with leading figures in the sector. These experiences are invaluable as they build the students’ international perspective and broaden their understanding of the global maritime supply chain.

MPA has expressed pride in supporting these aspiring professionals, noting that these opportunities play a significant role in shaping the future of the maritime industry. It’s expected that these students will return to Singapore with fresh perspectives and a deeper appreciation of the complexities of international shipping, logistics, and port management.

With the rise of globalization and the continuous evolution of maritime trade, exchanges like this are critical in preparing the next generation of industry leaders. By exposing students to the vast maritime networks of Europe, MPA is equipping them with the skills and insights necessary to contribute meaningfully to the industry’s future.
