The port authorities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam have strengthened their collaboration by officially adding the Dam2Dam Shuttle to the national network of Joint Corridors Off-Road. This new train service offers an efficient and sustainable solution for container transport between the two port regions.

The Dam2Dam Shuttle is a freight train connection between the TMA terminal in the Port of Amsterdam and several terminals in the Port of Rotterdam. Transporting goods by rail offers significant advantages, as one freight train can replace about 100 trucks. This not only eases road traffic but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions. The shuttle runs eight times a week on a fixed schedule, ensuring a reliable and consistent service.

This shift from road to rail, known as a “modal shift,” marks a crucial step towards more sustainable freight transport. Both the Port of Amsterdam and the Port of Rotterdam are committed to reducing the environmental footprint of their logistics chains. Encouraging rail transport supports this goal while also enhancing the efficiency and reliability of cargo movement.

Maurice Delattre from the Port of Amsterdam shared his enthusiasm for this initiative: “We are pleased with this collaboration. With the Dam2Dam Shuttle, together with TMA Logistics and the Port of Rotterdam, we are taking an important step towards a future where sustainable transport is the norm.” The sentiment reflects a broader commitment to greener logistics solutions.

Now that the Dam2Dam Shuttle has been officially integrated into the Joint Corridors Off-Road network, shippers looking to shift their cargo from road to rail (or inland waterways) can apply for subsidies to support this transition. This financial incentive further encourages businesses to participate in the modal shift, aligning economic benefits with environmental sustainability.

With the slogan “Skip the lane, ship by train. Join the modal shift,” both port authorities are calling on the logistics sector to be part of this move toward greener transport. The Dam2Dam Shuttle serves as a concrete example of how collaboration between ports and companies can lead to innovative solutions that contribute to a better future.

The Dam2Dam Shuttle is supported by a coalition that includes Topsector Logistics, Joint Corridors Off-Road, Joint Corridors South Holland, Northwest Connect (Amsterdam Logistics), Port of Amsterdam, Port of Rotterdam, TMA Logistics, and Emerio. This broad partnership underscores the collective effort needed to drive change in the logistics sector and promote more sustainable practices.
