New Terminal in Rijeka Welcomes Arrival of First Ship-to-Shore Cranes

Rijeka, Croatia’s new terminal took a major step forward with the arrival of its first two ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, with two more set to follow. Built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC), these towering cranes arrived by sea, making for a striking visual as they were moved into place, a scene that captured the interest of local residents and maritime enthusiasts alike.

Adding a local touch, each crane bears the name of an inspiring woman from Croatian history, including the country’s first female Olympic medalist. This decision came about through a community survey, reflecting Rijeka’s commitment to honoring the legacy of influential women. The terminal’s quay will be christened as the “Square of Powerful Women of Rijeka,” reinforcing this celebration of female achievements.

Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway, shared his excitement: “It is amazing to see the cranes finally here in Rijeka. After months of preparation, the rubber finally hits the road with the gradual arrival of our new equipment. We are really starting to resemble the new terminal and gateway to the region, and it’s super exciting!”

The terminal, a joint venture between global operator APM Terminals and Croatian partner ENNA, is poised to become a key player in the East Adriatic and Central European logistics network. Scheduled for operation in 2025, the terminal’s strategic position is expected to streamline trade routes and enhance regional connectivity.

The addition of these cranes not only signals the terminal’s progress but also sets the tone for its future impact on the regional economy. As construction continues, Rijeka is gearing up to become a pivotal gateway, shaping the region’s logistics and trade landscape for years to come.
