North Star has signed an agreement with shipbuilder VARD for the design and construction of two new commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs), with an option for two additional units. This deal could generate up to 200 new seafaring jobs once the fleet becomes operational.
With a workforce of 1,300 and the largest wholly UK-owned fleet operating in the North Sea, North Star has committed to delivering 40 offshore wind vessels by 2040. The company, acquired by Partners Group in 2022, continues to expand its offshore wind service capabilities to meet growing demand across the UK and Europe.
The new vessels will feature the bespoke VARD 4 22 design, developed in collaboration with Vard Design in Ålesund, Norway. These ships are optimized for fuel efficiency and resistance, with hybrid methanol-ready propulsion systems. Enhanced accommodation and operability will ensure high standards for technicians working on offshore wind projects.
This contract builds on North Star’s previous orders with VARD, including four service operation vessels (SOVs) commissioned in 2021 for the Dogger Bank wind farm. The first three vessels are set to begin operations this year, with the final unit scheduled for delivery in 2024.
North Star CEO Matthew Gordon highlighted the company’s ongoing collaboration with VARD, stating, “We are thrilled to be expanding our offshore wind fleet. VARD has a strong track record in the C/SOV market, and our partnership ensures we can bring high-quality vessels to market on time. With the offshore wind sector growing rapidly across the UK and Europe, securing these newbuilds gives us the flexibility and reliability to meet future tender demands.”
The CSOVs will integrate Vard Electro’s SeaQ technology for power management, navigation, and communication. The hybrid propulsion system will improve energy efficiency, reducing emissions and fuel consumption. Each vessel will be equipped with a high-performance daughter craft and space for an additional one, ensuring operational adaptability.
Alberto Maestrini, CEO of VARD, emphasized the strategic importance of the contract: “These agreements reinforce VARD’s position as a leader in offshore wind support vessels. We are proud to be chosen by North Star and to contribute to the industry’s green transition with our innovative solutions.”
The hulls of the first two CSOVs will be constructed at VARD’s Romanian facilities before outfitting and commissioning in Norway. The vessels are expected to be delivered in the first half of 2025.
