In a stride towards a greener maritime future, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and its consortium partners have secured an Approval-in-Principle (AiP) from ClassNK for an innovative ammonia-fueled bunkering vessel. This vessel, designed by LMG Marin AS, a subsidiary of Seatrium Limited, represents a pivotal development in the quest for sustainable marine energy solutions.
The issuance of the AiP certificate marks a crucial step in the consortium’s mission to decarbonize the shipping industry and establish a robust value chain for ammonia as a marine fuel. With the global maritime sector under increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this initiative underscores the collaborative commitment of NYK and its partners to foster a more sustainable industry.

Tsutomu Yokoyama, Executive Officer at NYK Line, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “This Approval-in-Principle represents a critical milestone in our efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean ammonia as a sustainable marine fuel.” The consortium’s combined expertise in ammonia technology and engineering capabilities positions them as leaders in the transition to alternative fuels.
LMG Marin’s role in this project cannot be overstated. The company provided essential engineering support, conducting a comprehensive Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) to validate the vessel’s design. This study was instrumental in ensuring that the design meets stringent safety, technical, and environmental standards. The vessel’s design also adheres to the International Maritime Organization’s interim guidelines for ammonia fuel safety, which were approved in December 2024.
The ammonia-fueled vessel will feature dual-fuel engines from IHI Power Systems, which are designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These engines are already in use on the world’s first commercial ammonia-fueled tugboat, Sakigake, delivered in August 2024. Additionally, the vessel will incorporate a state-of-the-art bunkering boom developed by TB Global Technologies, equipped with a High Speed Ammonia Purging Emergency Release System (ERS) for safe and efficient operations.
Aziz Merchant, Executive Vice President for Engineering and Technology at Seatrium, expressed pride in the consortium’s efforts, stating, “We are honored to contribute to this industry-leading initiative led by NYK and its partners.” He highlighted the project’s focus on ammonia as a non-fossil-based marine fuel, reinforcing Seatrium’s commitment to advancing sustainability and supporting global decarbonization goals.
As the design moves forward for evaluation by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), it showcases Singapore’s role as a hub for innovation in sustainable maritime solutions. If realized, this vessel will be the first of its kind, significantly contributing to Singapore’s marine decarbonization efforts and setting a precedent for the global maritime industry.
