NYK Line celebrated its 139th anniversary on October 2, 2024, with an address by President Takaya Soga. He shared his thoughts on the company’s long history and the challenges ahead in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
Soga acknowledged the company’s resilience over the decades, attributing its longevity to the hard work of both current employees and predecessors. He emphasized that the world, having just emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, still faces significant challenges. From economic fluctuations driven by currency differences to geopolitical conflicts affecting corporate safety, Soga underscored the importance of adaptability. The global situation is becoming more fragmented, making it essential for NYK to respond swiftly to changes and maintain unity across its workforce.
Soga also addressed Japan’s labor shortages, a pressing issue for NYK’s operations, especially in securing necessary maritime personnel. He called on employees to remain vigilant in adapting to the “tides of a new era” and to continually reassess their approaches.
In reviewing NYK’s medium-term management plan, Soga outlined how the company has adjusted its business strategies, particularly in areas connected to sustainability and decarbonization. The company has made significant strides, especially in aligning with regulations such as the European Union’s Emissions Trading System and the forthcoming FuelEU Maritime initiative. The company’s early shift towards greener fuels positions it well to meet these upcoming challenges.
Additionally, Soga highlighted NYK’s progress in technological innovation, particularly in digital transformation (DX) and labor-saving technologies. He noted that the group’s decarbonization efforts are some of the best in the shipping industry, but warned that cyberattacks remain a growing risk in this increasingly digital landscape. Soga emphasized that everyone at NYK plays a crucial role in defending against these threats.
With a new government in Japan and mounting global tensions, particularly in the Middle East, Soga encouraged the NYK team to face these turbulent times with optimism, flexibility, and boldness. Looking ahead to the company’s 140th anniversary, he expressed confidence in NYK’s ability to navigate the stormy seas ahead.
