Olympic Boreas’ CSOV has been officially delivered to Olympic by Ulstein Verft as of July 25, 2024. This vessel is the first of two sister ships, showcasing the innovative ULSTEIN SX222 design by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS.
Designed with the TWIN X-STERN solution, Olympic Boreas features a unique hybrid power integration. It’s equipped with a comprehensive gangway system and high-capacity accommodations that include offices, lounges, day rooms, game rooms, and an exercise room, making it a veritable home at sea. The ship is even nominated for the prestigious Ship of the Year Award.
“We are proud to welcome Olympic Boreas, an innovative and pioneering vessel. This ship is a product of the excellent cooperation between Ulstein and Olympic and the strength of the maritime cluster in our region. It will play an essential role in our future operations within offshore energy. We look forward to using this high-quality vessel to promote sustainable, efficient, and safe operations in the industry,” stated Stig Remøy, CEO of Olympic Group.
Ulstein Group CEO Gunvor Ulstein remarked, “In partnership with Olympic, we have developed and built an exceptional ship. We have collaborated with Olympic on numerous past projects and are gratified that they once again selected Ulstein for this innovative newbuild. I am proud to announce the delivery of this high-quality, next-generation offshore energy vessel that is set to benefit the shipowner for many years ahead.”
Olympic Boreas is the first vessel to feature the TWIN X-STERN. This design, developed by Ulstein, enhances the vessel’s seakeeping abilities, ensuring safe and comfortable journeys. The TWIN X-STERN solution includes four main thrusters, significantly improving the vessel’s fuel efficiency during dynamic positioning operations.
The hybrid power solution from Ulstein Power & Control incorporates a substantial battery system and diesel generators that operate at variable speeds, optimizing fuel use. The vessel is prepared for methanol fuel, setting the stage for future zero-emission operations. Reserved space for additional battery capacity allows for full-electric operations once the infrastructure is available, highlighting the focus on energy efficiency.
The Olympic Boreas will be officially named during a ceremony on July 27, with the Olympic and Ulstein teams wishing her fair winds and following seas.
Measuring 89.6 meters in length and 19.2 meters in beam, the ULSTEIN SX222 vessels can accommodate 126 people in 91 cabins, all designed to provide daylight.
Olympic and Ulstein, alongside other partners, are engaging in a life-cycle assessment (LCA) project for new vessels, focusing on the Olympic Boreas and her sister ship. This project aims to evaluate the environmental impact of maritime technologies and identify alternative low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector.
