One of World’s First Capesize Bulk Carrier Equipped with Rotor Sails Sets Sail for Vale

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Vale International SA have announced the successful retrofitting of a 200,000-ton class bulk carrier with Norsepower Rotor Sails™. This is the world’s first installation of rotor sails on a Capesize bulk carrier, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s quest to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The vessel, named Camellia Dream, made its first call at Ponta da Madeira, Brazil, showcasing the effectiveness of this innovative technology. The two 35m x 5m rotor sails are expected to deliver substantial fuel savings and emission reductions, potentially cutting GHG emissions by 6-10% on Brazil-Far East routes. This achievement is not just a testament to the technological advancements in the industry, but also to the commitment of companies like MOL and Vale towards creating a more sustainable future.

MOL’s “Environmental Vision 2.2” aims for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, with the introduction of energy-saving technologies such as rotor sails playing a key role. The company is focused on reducing the environmental footprint of its fleet while ensuring safe and efficient operations. The Camellia Dream’s rotor sails represent a tangible step forward in achieving these ambitious goals.

Vale, on the other hand, has been actively supporting the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts through its Ecoshipping program. Since 2018, Vale has been operating some of the most efficient vessels in the world, such as second-generation Valemaxes and Guaibamaxes. The Ecoshipping program underscores Vale’s commitment to reducing its scope 3 emissions, which include emissions from shipping activities.

The collaboration between MOL and Vale in retrofitting the Camellia Dream with rotor sails is a prime example of how partnerships can drive innovation and sustainability in the maritime industry. Both companies are determined to contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society, aligning with global decarbonization targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Paris Agreement.

As the maritime industry continues to explore and adopt cleaner technologies, the successful deployment of rotor sails on a Capesize bulk carrier could set a precedent for future retrofits and new builds. It is a clear indication that the industry is moving towards a future where sustainability is at the forefront of operations.

This landmark achievement is not just about meeting regulatory requirements; it is about taking proactive steps towards a greener future. As MOL and Vale continue their efforts, the Camellia Dream will serve as a beacon of what can be achieved when innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
