Ørsted and Edison Chouest Offshore Unveil First-Ever US-Built Service Operations Vessel (SOV)

Ørsted and Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) have proudly christened the ECO Edison, the first-ever US-built service operations vessel (SOV), at the Port of New Orleans on May 11th.

The ECO Edison, a testament to American ingenuity and craftsmanship, represents a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards offshore renewable energy development. Constructed at ECO’s shipyard in Louisiana, the vessel’s construction commenced in March 2022 and reached a notable 50% completion milestone in April last year.

A collaborative effort involving over 600 skilled workers and nearly 1 million work hours across ECO’s shipyards in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, the ECO Edison stands as a symbol of industry-wide dedication and collaboration. Notably, components for the vessel were sourced from 34 states across the nation, highlighting the widespread impact of this groundbreaking project.

Designed to support the operation and maintenance (O&M) activities of Ørsted and Eversource’s South Fork Wind, Revolution Wind, and Sunrise Wind offshore wind farms, the ECO Edison will play a pivotal role in advancing the US offshore wind industry. Under a long-term charter agreement signed in 2020, the SOV will serve as a year-round homebase for 60 of the nation’s first offshore wind turbine technicians.

Equipped with state-of-the-art features, including two Cat 3512E engines supplied by Houston-based Caterpillar Marine, the ECO Edison boasts a walk-to-work motion-compensated gangway for efficient turbine access and a “daughter craft” onboard for seamless crew transfers across wind farms.

The vessel’s christening ceremony, officiated by Jennifer Scalise, was attended by distinguished guests including US House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and US Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr., alongside senior executives from Ørsted and Edison Chouest Offshore.

As the ECO Edison sets sail, it heralds a new era of opportunity and innovation in the US offshore wind sector, underscoring the nation’s commitment to sustainable energy and economic growth.
