A large transformer, crucial for stabilizing power supply in the Var region, has reached its destination in Vinon-sur-Verdon, marking the end of an intricate logistical operation. Starting its journey from the national reserve in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, this engineering marvel traveled via barge to Lyon before being transferred to another barge en route to the Port of Fos-sur-Mer. From there, it embarked on a challenging road journey to its final stop.
The transport involved navigating narrow, winding roads and crossing the Canal de Provence on a specially adapted bridge. This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill heavy haul; precise calculations were necessary to distribute the load evenly across the transporter. To manage the bridge crossing, the transporter’s trailer had to be extended from 18 to a whopping 24 axles—a logistical feat that showcases the complexity of moving such heavy cargo.
Time was of the essence. The transformer was urgently required to replace one destroyed in a fire at the Boutre electrical substation over the summer. In record time, the teams at Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE), with state support, pulled off this ambitious operation. Now safely installed, the transformer is set to ensure the region’s power grid remains stable as winter approaches.
This kind of operation shows the critical role of the breakbulk and project cargo sectors in supporting essential infrastructure. Whether it’s keeping the lights on or ensuring industrial projects run smoothly, the industry thrives on delivering the seemingly impossible.
