Port Houston is expanding its container handling capabilities with an order for 16 hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs) from Konecranes, along with retrofit plans for eight existing RTGs already in operation. The move strengthens the port’s long-standing partnership with the Finnish manufacturer and supports its shift toward cleaner, more efficient terminal operations.
A Larger Hybrid Fleet to Meet Rising Demand
Scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2026, the new cranes will bring the total number of Konecranes RTGs at Port Houston to 163, 73 of which will be hybrid models. The order was finalized in Q1 2025. These next-generation machines come equipped with 1-over-6 stacking capacity and a suite of Smart Features, including Auto-steering, Stack Collision Prevention, and Truck Lift Prevention. Each unit is powered by a hybrid system that reduces fuel consumption and emissions—critical upgrades for ports adapting to tightening environmental regulations.
Retrofitting Existing Assets with New Tech
While expanding the fleet, Port Houston isn’t letting its older machines fall behind. Konecranes Port Services will retrofit eight of the port’s current RTGs, equipping them with the same Smart Features as the new models. The upgrade includes Gantry Collision Prevention, Auto-Steering, and new E-Chains. The retrofits are expected to be completed by the end of 2025 and aim to extend the operational life and safety of the existing cranes.
Operational Trust and Long-Term Planning
The decision to invest again in Konecranes equipment was influenced by more than just the tech. Nathan Fabian, Director of Port Cranes at Port Houston, emphasized the close working relationship between the port and the crane supplier. “The trust we’ve built with Konecranes played an important role in our decision to make these investments. We work in partnership with the skilled labor who work at our container terminals to determine the best equipment for the operations at Port Houston,” he said. Fabian pointed to consistent support from Konecranes Port Services as a key factor in the port’s confidence moving forward.
Meeting Growth with Efficiency and Emission Reduction
Port Houston continues to lead Gulf Coast container traffic, and these investments reflect preparations for long-term growth. By combining new hybrid technology with upgrades to existing machinery, the port is banking on both efficiency and sustainability. The upgrades align with Konecranes’ broader Ecolifting strategy—focused on reducing the carbon footprint of lifting operations across the globe.
Jussi Sarpio, Director of Regional Sales Americas at Konecranes, noted the significance of the order. “We’re very happy to continue supporting Port Houston with these new RTG deliveries and advanced retrofits,” he said. “The orders reflect the industry-leading strengths of our hybrid RTG technology and the incredible skills of our Port Services team.”
