Port of Melbourne Welcomes New Chair Debbie Goodin

Port of Melbourne has officially announced the appointment of Debbie Goodin as the incoming independent Chair of its Board of Directors, with her term set to commence on March 1, 2025. Ms. Goodin, a seasoned executive with over three decades of experience across both the public and private sectors, brings an impressive background in corporate governance and a focus on sustainable, long-term infrastructure management. Her expertise is expected to be pivotal in guiding the Port through its next phase of growth.

Ms. Goodin’s extensive leadership background spans several high-stakes industries, including water, energy, and transport—critical infrastructure sectors that share fundamental similarities with the operational complexities of the Port of Melbourne. Her experience equips her with a nuanced understanding of infrastructure challenges, particularly in highly regulated environments, positioning her well to lead a major freight and logistics hub like Melbourne.

On her appointment, Ms. Goodin expressed enthusiasm for joining the Port, emphasizing the broader economic and social impact the Port has on the community. “I am pleased to be joining Port of Melbourne as Chair,” she said, highlighting the Port’s central role as an economic powerhouse with a tangible effect on the lives of Victorians and Australians alike. Ms. Goodin voiced optimism that through collaboration with government and stakeholders, the Port could strengthen Victoria’s competitive edge, contributing to economic growth and enhancing the liveability of Greater Melbourne.

This leadership transition comes as current Chair John Stanhope prepares to step down at the end of February 2025. Mr. Stanhope has been a vital figure for the Port since his appointment as its first Chair in 2016, shortly after the Port entered into a 50-year lease with the Victorian Government. His tenure saw the Port evolve from government ownership to private leasing, setting a strategic course for the future that has already brought significant economic benefits to the region.

Mr. Stanhope’s achievements include overseeing the development of the Port’s inaugural roadmap, which responded proactively to rising trade demands while enhancing the Port’s connection to the wider community. The Board has extended its gratitude for his guidance and dedication, crediting his leadership with a smooth and successful operational transition.

Ms. Goodin will attend Board meetings as an observer beginning October 2024, providing a preparatory period before officially stepping into the role next year. As the Port looks ahead, Ms. Goodin’s appointment signals a continued commitment to stakeholder collaboration and community involvement, along with a forward-looking approach to infrastructure development that prioritizes both economic vitality and environmental responsibility.
