At the Port of Naples, cargo operator Magazzini Generali Silos Frigoriferi (MGSF), a subsidiary of the Klingenberg Group, has placed an order for a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.6 Mobile Harbor Crane, aiming to improve both handling capacity and energy efficiency. The deal, finalized in the first quarter of 2025, schedules delivery and commissioning for the final quarter of the year.

The crane will support a broad range of cargo operations, from steel products to large bags and pulp, reflecting MGSF’s diverse project cargo portfolio. What makes this crane particularly noteworthy is its hybrid diesel-electric drive system, which includes an ultracapacitor capable of recovering up to 125 kW of energy for reuse. The setup also includes an interface for shore power connection—paving the way for full electrification when port infrastructure allows.
According to Erik Klingenberg, Managing Director of the Klingenberg Group, the choice of supplier came down to performance. “Quality and reliability are paramount for us, so Konecranes is the natural choice,” he said. “We’ve had very positive experiences with the technology and support provided by the company for our two existing cranes.”
This third crane enhances MGSF’s operational capacity and aligns with its sustainability targets, especially as regulations in Italy push ports toward lower-emission operations. By integrating the crane with existing equipment, Konecranes provided customized load curves tailored to MGSF’s attachments—meaning the new crane can be seamlessly added to daily operations without the need for extensive adjustment.
MGSF will also benefit from digital monitoring via Konecranes TRUCONNECT, allowing remote access to real-time data on energy consumption, CO₂ emissions, and crane performance through the yourKONECRANES portal.
Gino Gherri, Regional Sales Manager, Port Solutions, Konecranes, noted that the order highlights the continued industry trust in Konecranes solutions. “MGSF benefits from strong synergies across its Konecranes equipment, while the lower fuel consumption of the hybrid drive is aligned with the latest Italian regulations.”
The order contributes to Konecranes’ wider Ecolifting strategy, which focuses on reducing customers’ carbon footprints while maximizing the positive environmental impacts of its technologies.
