Port Authority Awards Contracts for Standardized Shore Power Rollout

The Port of Rotterdam is moving forward with the next phase of its shore power strategy for inland shipping, awarding contracts to Endenburg Elektrotechniek, SPIE Nederland, and Istimewa Elektrotechniek to modernize, expand, and standardize shore power facilities across the city’s port areas.

The initiative marks a significant step in the port’s efforts to reduce emissions from inland waterway transport while improving the reliability and management of electrical infrastructure used by vessels alongside.

Under the program, the Port of Rotterdam Authority will introduce a single standardized design for new shore power cabinets. The approach is intended to simplify maintenance, improve operational reliability, and ensure seamless integration with the port’s digital data platform.

Digital Monitoring Supports Future Expansion

Beyond replacing aging infrastructure, the project includes upgrades to digital control systems and monitoring capabilities. According to the port authority, the enhanced digital framework will improve ease of use for vessel operators while enabling future expansion of shore power services to additional locations.

For inland vessel crews, access to reliable shore power allows onboard diesel generators to be switched off while berthed. The result is lower emissions, reduced noise levels, and improved environmental performance within urban port areas.

The modernization effort aligns with broader European and Dutch initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport and accelerating the energy transition across logistics networks.

Supporting Cleaner Port Operations

Speaking about the project, Egbert van der Wal, Head of Port Development at the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said the standardization program creates a stronger foundation for the future deployment of shore power throughout the port.

He noted that the combination of modernization and standardization will benefit both inland shipping operators and the surrounding city by creating a more robust and scalable shore power network.

As ports across Europe increase investment in electrification infrastructure, Rotterdam’s latest move highlights the growing role of shore power in reducing the environmental footprint of cargo transportation and supporting cleaner port operations.
