Presidential Meeting: A Milestone for Maritime Decarbonisation

Highlighting the commitment to innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector, the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, visited the Guiana Space Centre during his recent trip to Kourou, French Guiana. Among the notable encounters during this visit was his meeting with Jean-Michel BERUD, Chairman of Jifmar Group and Chairman of Alizés, aboard the Canopée, a vessel designed to cater to ArianeGroup’s logistical needs.

Jean-Michel BERUD expressed the significance of this encounter, stating, “Jifmar Group has been built around innovation since its inception.” The group’s commitment to sustainability was underscored by its acquisition of the workboat division of Acta Marine, positioning them as a global contender in the workboat industry, boasting a fleet of over 70 vessels and nearly 600 employees.

One of the hallmarks of Jifmar Group’s commitment to decarbonisation is its fleet of vessels offering alternative propulsion solutions. Among these is the Canopée, the world’s first hybrid industrial cargo ship powered by wind, equipped with Oceanwings363

designed by AYRO. Additionally, vessels like the Coastal Liberty, converted to hydrogen in 2023, and the Coastal Crown, equipped with a hybrid Tier III thermal propulsion system and electric propulsion, highlight the group’s dedication to reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.

Jean Michel BERUD emphasized, “Decarbonising our fleet is above all a question of innovation.” The integration of alternative propulsion systems reflects the group’s proactive approach towards addressing environmental concerns while maintaining operational efficiency.

The meeting between Jean-Michel BERUD and President Macron serves as a powerful symbol for the maritime industry’s transition towards decarbonisation and innovation. It underscores the collaborative efforts between the private sector and government entities to foster sustainable practices within the maritime domain.

In conclusion, as Jean-Michel BERUD aptly stated, “Together, let’s build the maritime world of tomorrow.” This sentiment encapsulates the collective resolve of industry stakeholders to embrace technological advancements and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable maritime future.
