QatarEnergy has officially launched the “Rex Tillerson,” the first conventional-size LNG vessel under its historic shipbuilding program. Named after Rex Tillerson, the former Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, the vessel stands as a tribute to Tillerson’s enduring influence in the global energy sector. The naming ceremony took place at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai, China, attracting a distinguished list of attendees, including QatarEnergy’s top brass and key figures from China’s maritime and energy sectors.
Among those present at the ceremony were His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, along with Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al-Thani, CEO of QatarEnergy LNG. High-ranking representatives from China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited were also in attendance, underscoring the international significance of this event.
In his remarks, Minister Al-Kaabi highlighted the depth of the relationship between Qatar and ExxonMobil, particularly under Tillerson’s leadership. “Mr. Tillerson’s legacy will always be remembered in Qatar and around the world,” he said. “We are grateful for Rex’s friendship and partnership with Qatar, and his long-lasting marks on the global energy industry.” His words carried a tone of admiration and respect, acknowledging Tillerson’s role in strengthening ties between Qatar and one of the world’s largest oil companies.
The new LNG vessel “Rex Tillerson” is more than just a ship—it represents a significant step in QatarEnergy’s plans to meet the increasing global demand for cleaner energy. As the first vessel in a new LNG fleet, it will serve as a key component in QatarEnergy’s strategy to deliver liquefied natural gas to markets worldwide. “This event embodies our commitment to meet the world’s growing need for cleaner energy and to be part of the global economic development for decades to come,” added Al-Kaabi, emphasizing the strategic importance of this launch.
Rex Tillerson himself expressed his gratitude for the honor, noting his longstanding connection with Qatar during his nearly 42-year career at ExxonMobil. “I am deeply honored to have this magnificent ship carry my name,” Tillerson stated. “I hope it will have many years of safe service delivering energy the world over.”
The celebration didn’t end there. QatarEnergy also introduced a second LNG vessel named “Umm Ghuwailina,” part of a 12-ship order placed with the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard. These vessels are equipped with the latest in maritime technology to ensure optimal operational efficiency and adhere to stringent environmental regulations. Both the “Rex Tillerson” and “Umm Ghuwailina” are set to be delivered ahead of their scheduled timelines and will be under long-term charters by QatarEnergy Trading (QET).
Highlighting QatarEnergy’s commitment to safety and sustainability, the vessels feature advanced dual-fuel engines, generators, and boilers designed to reduce both fuel consumption and emissions. Minister Al-Kaabi praised the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard for their craftsmanship and the strong partnerships that have enabled the successful launch of these state-of-the-art vessels.
The launch of “Rex Tillerson” and “Umm Ghuwailina” marks a new chapter in Qatar’s maritime history, reinforcing its status as a leading exporter of LNG while committing to sustainable and efficient energy solutions for the future.
