The Rise of Industrial Airports

For the past few years airports have been struggling with the capacity of their flights. In a recent move at Amsterdam Airport, Schiphol, the airport has gone so far as to shift charter (holiday) flights from Amsterdam to another airport which is about 30 kilometer away and which would not be favorable with travelers. This could mean that coming from another European country to Amsterdam to then catch your holiday charter to your holiday destination would mean you have to travel from Amsterdam to the outer airport.

For years now logistics companies have been wondering why travelers have to be mixed with cargo. Off course there are aircrafts carrying freight in their belly however that is a different type of cargo that so called Full-Freighters are carrying. Cargo typically takes another type of handling then passengers and for that reason one has to wonder if this should not be done at different airports with a different infrastructure. The positive about this is that airports are freeing up capacity and are able to extend their passenger services and destinations. There are a few studies ongoing in this direction one in The Netherlands and the other in Texas where the airport for cargo is fully ready to start operations.

Alliance Fort Worth Airport in Texas near Dallas, where predominantly cargo and service is being handled, and for good reason. Alliance or AFW airport is designed to be precisely that, an industrial airport and has been for some time now. Difference is that lately, since they have extended the runway, they are able to handle full freighters of any size and have them take off fully loaded and fueled up for direct connections to Europe of Asia. This will shift the landscape of cargo significantly in the very near future.

With the rise of all cargo airlines and the frequent schedules they are intensifying, the option of a fully cargo airport or industrial airport is coming very near. AFW for instants is already home of large companies that have settled near he airport for good reason. Amazon at AWF is one such example with over 6 million square feet of warehouse. But also high tech companies, pharma, and other technology companies that have found their home at or near the airport. With capacity issues at DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) airport, this would be a blessing as they can now concentrate on the passenger services more and bring in more direct connections.
