Guatemala’s Puerto Quetzal Welcomes a Greener Towage Solution
SAAM Towage will deploy the SAAM Hunabku, Guatemala’s first IMO Tier III-compliant tugboat, at Puerto Quetzal as part of its fleet renewal program in the Americas. The vessel, built by Sanmar Shipyards in Türkiye, marks a significant step in reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the region.
A Milestone for Sustainability and Operational Excellence
The SAAM Hunabku, a Boğaçay-class tug based on Robert Allan’s RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design, combines compact dimensions (24.4 meters in length, 12 meters in beam) with high operational capacity. It features two CAT 3516E engines, over 80 metric tons of bollard pull, a FiFi-1 fire-fighting system, and dual azimuth propulsion. The vessel can accommodate a crew of seven and reach speeds of up to 12.5 knots.
Pablo Cáceres, SAAM Towage’s Manager of Innovation and New Construction, emphasized the vessel’s role in advancing the company’s sustainability strategy. “The SAAM Hunabku will enable more environmentally friendly operations at Puerto Quetzal,” he stated, highlighting its alignment with IMO Tier III standards, which represent the highest international benchmarks for NOx emissions control.
