SAL Heavy Lift Unveils Third Methanol-Ready Orca Class Vessel, MV Patricia

Germany’s SAL Heavy Lift has marked another milestone with the launch of MV Patricia, the third vessel in its cutting-edge methanol-ready Orca class series. This 14,600 dwt multipurpose heavy lift ship, unveiled at Wuhu Shipyard in China on December 14, represents a significant leap forward in sustainable maritime logistics.

The Orca class, a brainchild of SAL Heavy Lift and its Dutch joint-venture partner Jumbo Shipping, is a shining example of what modern engineering can achieve. Back in 2022, the duo placed an ambitious order for five of these vessels, setting the stage for a new era of heavy lift shipping. These ships aren’t just built to haul massive loads—they’re designed to do so while leaving a much smaller carbon footprint.

Each vessel boasts impressive stats: 149.9 meters in length, 27.2 meters wide, and equipped with cutting-edge hybrid propulsion systems. They feature Wärtsilä’s 32 main engines, which can run on methanol fuel, ensuring compatibility with future green energy solutions. Add to this the 800-ton fully electric cranes, and it’s clear these ships are more than just workhorses—they’re pioneers.

The Orca class is also a step toward smarter port operations. With shore power connectivity, these vessels can plug into local grids, cutting emissions even further while in port. It’s a move that aligns seamlessly with the industry’s broader push for climate-neutral logistics.

SAL’s earlier launches in the Orca class, Elise and Frida, have already found their niche in the renewable energy sector. These two vessels are dedicated to transporting offshore wind turbine components, thanks to a long-term partnership with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. It’s a deal that underscores SAL’s commitment to supporting the green energy transition.

As for Patricia, she’s the third jewel in a crown that’s still being forged. Two more vessels, Carlotta and Vera, are slated to join the fleet by 2025. Together, this quintet is poised to redefine what’s possible in heavy lift and project cargo logistics.
