Sarens Completes Installation of Monopiles for Moray West Offshore Wind Farm

Sarens, in collaboration with Ocean Winds, completed the installation of all monopiles for the Moray West offshore wind farm in Scotland. This monumental task, undertaken by Sarens PSG, a joint venture between Sarens and PSG Marine & Logistics, marks a significant milestone in the UK’s renewable energy transition.

The operation, conducted at the port of Invergordon, involved handling 62 massive monopiles, each weighing up to 2000 tonnes. These XXL monopiles, boasting diameters of up to 10 meters and lengths extending to 84.7 meters, are among the largest and heaviest ever to be handled in the UK.

Using state-of-the-art self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) with 166 axle-lines, Sarens successfully maneuvered the monopiles, overcoming adverse weather conditions and logistical challenges. Despite facing wet and snowy weather during winter, the team ensured optimal ground conditions for seamless operations.

The mobilization and demobilization of equipment, spanning approximately three weeks each way, required meticulous coordination and execution. Additionally, the construction of soil bunds for monopile storage presented a significant mobilization effort, extending over 2-3 months.

The SPMT configuration, consisting of two sets of 80 axle-lines each, complemented by a 6-axle setup for smaller components, provided the necessary flexibility for efficient transport and handling operations throughout the project.

Strategic storage arrangements and sequencing methodologies were devised to ensure efficient access to the monopiles during load-out. Steve Clark, managing director of SarensPSG, emphasized the company’s commitment to driving positive change in the renewable energy landscape, positioning SarensPSG as a ‘Sustainability Accelerator’ in the industry.

As the world increasingly turns to renewable energy sources, achievements like the successful installation of monopiles for the Moray West offshore wind farm underscore the pivotal role of innovative solutions and collaborative efforts in advancing sustainability goals.
