Sellafield’s rail team recently celebrated a milestone with the arrival of their first fully electric locomotive. This marks a significant step for the site, which boasts one of the largest internal rail networks in the UK, featuring eleven miles of track dedicated to supporting site operations and the nation’s nuclear power industry.
The introduction of the new electric train is a strategic move by Sellafield to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance the reliability of its rail fleet. The transition began almost three years ago with the replacement of older diesel models by hybrid electric locomotives. According to Mark McSherry, the railways operations manager, the drivers have welcomed the newer machines due to their increased manoeuvrability and added comfort features compared to the old diesel models.
This new addition, a 40-tonne, fully battery-powered locomotive, was constructed in just four months by Clayton Equipment Ltd, based in Staffordshire. Train driver Keiren McCue highlighted the collaborative effort with Clayton’s team, noting their involvement in every stage of the process, from design and build to test driving and coordinating delivery. McCue expressed his enthusiasm about seeing the new locomotive in action.
The Clayton Equipment Ltd fully electric CB40 Battery Locomotive, now operational at Sellafield, represents the future of low-emission rail transport. This 40-tonne, 2-axle, 0-4-0 locomotive is not only 100% emission-free but also boasts a centre cab design that delivers many benefits typically found in much larger locomotives. Its low emission and low noise characteristics, combined with reduced operating and maintenance costs, make it an ideal solution for modern rail operations.
Equipped with a large battery and regenerative braking that returns energy to the battery, the CB40 locomotive can operate over long distances without the need for frequent recharging. Onboard chargers allow for battery charging from a 3-phase supply, ensuring the locomotive remains a 100% emission-free solution. With this addition, Sellafield now operates three Clayton-supplied locomotives, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable and efficient rail transport.
This development not only underscores Sellafield’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility but also sets a benchmark for the industry. The new electric train is expected to deliver both environmental and operational benefits, highlighting the potential of fully electric locomotives in heavy-duty industrial settings.
