Steerprop to Equip Largest Cable-Laying Vessel with Advanced Propulsion Systems

Steerprop is set to supply comprehensive propulsion systems for what will soon be one of the world’s largest cable-laying vessel, the Fleeming Jenkin. This ship is being constructed by China Merchants Heavy Industry Haimen (CMHI) and will be owned by Jan De Nul Group. With delivery expected in 2026, the Fleeming Jenkin will not only be the largest but also one of the cleanest cable-laying vessels thanks to Steerprop’s innovative propulsion solutions.

The propulsion system is designed to meet stringent maritime environmental regulations and align with the vessel’s demanding operating profile. Steerprop’s propulsion package includes four azimuth thrusters, which provide the primary propulsion. Maneuverability will be further enhanced by three tunnel thrusters and two retractable thrusters. An additional main thruster and an extensive spares package are also part of the contract, ensuring operational efficiency and reliability.

Juho Rekola, Steerprop’s Director of Sales and Project Management, emphasized the significance of this project. “This is a milestone project for us, not just because of the technology, but because we’ve demonstrated our flexibility and ability to meet various end-customer requirements. It shows that we can handle the demands of even the most challenging applications within our product portfolio,” Rekola stated.

The Fleeming Jenkin’s construction marks the first collaboration between Steerprop and CMHI, highlighting a new partnership in maritime engineering. Tao Chen, CMHI (Jiangsu) Deputy General Manager, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “We hope this cooperation will be smooth and demonstrate Steerprop’s expertise. We look forward to more projects together in the future.”

Jan De Nul Group is also constructing a second identical vessel, equipped with three carousels and a cable-carrying capacity of 28,000 tonnes. The Fleeming Jenkin and its sister vessel incorporate extensive cable installation expertise gathered over the past decade. Jan Van de Velde, Director of Newbuilds at Jan De Nul, noted the importance of integrating Steerprop’s advanced technology, saying, “This vessel and the technologies on board are designed by our in-house specialists. We are happy to add Steerprop’s expertise in delivering a comprehensive propulsion system, resulting in highly maneuverable and performant vessels for challenging offshore conditions.”

Steerprop’s commitment to understanding customer needs and expectations is evident in this project. Rekola highlighted this philosophy, saying, “Ship-owners shouldn’t have to compromise by choosing off-the-shelf solutions. They should set challenges and expect their suppliers to rise to them. The Fleeming Jenkin is a fine example of how this philosophy can help shape reality.”

This project underscores Steerprop’s role in advancing maritime propulsion technology and its capability to adapt to the rigorous demands of modern shipbuilding.
