Swiss WorldCargo Introduces Carbon Removal with Climeworks Partnership

Swiss WorldCargo has taken a significant step towards sustainability by launching an innovative carbon removal service in collaboration with Climeworks. This new offering, named ‘Aviation Tech Pioneer,’ is the first of its kind in the air cargo industry. It combines 20% CO2 removal through Climeworks’ pioneering direct air capture (DAC) technology with an 80% reduction using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Sustainability is at the heart of Swiss WorldCargo’s strategy, and this initiative reflects their commitment to becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. By integrating advanced technologies and forming strategic partnerships, Swiss WorldCargo aims to drive the aviation sector towards a greener future.

This new service builds on the carbon removal agreement signed by SWISS and the Lufthansa Group in March 2024. The partnership with Climeworks enables Swiss WorldCargo to offer a permanent solution for residual CO2 emissions. Climeworks’ DAC technology captures CO2 from the atmosphere and stores it permanently underground, offering a long-term solution to a persistent problem.

Direct air capture is a crucial technology for achieving carbon emission mitigation goals. Climeworks leads globally in this field, operating the world’s largest DAC and storage facilities in Iceland. This technology not only removes CO2 but also provides a scalable means for producing synthetic fuels, essential for decarbonizing the airline sector.

Swiss WorldCargo’s ‘Aviation Tech Pioneer’ package allows customers to support sustainability initiatives through carbon removal and SAF investment. This premium offering provides a tangible way for customers to reduce their environmental impact and reach their emission reduction targets.

With Climeworks as its partner, Swiss WorldCargo is setting a new standard in the air freight industry. This collaboration reflects SWISS’s ongoing commitment to scaling up defossilization technologies and promoting sustainable practices.

Laurent Müller, Director of Strategic Partnerships Management at Climeworks, highlighted the significance of this partnership: “We’re excited to realize this first-of-a-kind pilot with Swiss WorldCargo. It serves as an inspiring example for how the aviation industry can accelerate the much-needed scale-up of carbon removal within their own industry and beyond.”

Lorenzo Stoll, Head of Cargo at Swiss International Air Lines Ltd., echoed this sentiment: “At Swiss WorldCargo, we’re very glad to be bringing our division one step closer to its environmental goals by establishing this important collaboration. Thanks to Climeworks’ innovative technology, we’re able to offer our customers a premium solution to mitigate the impact of their operations on the environment.”

This initiative represents a significant advancement in sustainable air freight, paving the way for more environmentally friendly practices in the aviation and logistics industries.
