Terminales Marítimas de Vigo Invests in Hybrid Konecranes RTGs to Boost Eco-Efficiency

Terminales Marítimas de Vigo, S.L.U. (Termavi) has taken a bold step toward greener operations by ordering two hybrid Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes. This move aligns with the company’s strategy to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance operational productivity at its container terminal in the Port of Vigo, Spain. The deal, finalized in Q4 2024, marks Termavi’s first collaboration with Konecranes, with delivery expected by Q4 2025.

Termavi’s investment is part of a broader commitment to sustainability. The company has been actively working on various initiatives to cut its environmental impact while maintaining high operational standards. According to Román Davila González, Associate Director at Termavi, the decision to invest in hybrid RTGs was a natural progression. “Our investment in hybrid Konecranes RTGs aligns with our drive for more efficient and sustainable container handling. These cranes cut emissions and reduce fuel consumption, and their advanced safety and automation features improve our productivity. We’re also leaving the door open to potential retrofitting for hydrogen power,” he stated.

The hybrid RTGs are fitted with an array of Konecranes Smart Features, including Auto-Steering, Auto-Truck Guiding, Auto-Path Optimization, and Auto-Positioning. These features ensure precise container handling and seamless integration with terminal operating systems through Auto-TOS Reporting. The cranes also come equipped with trolley and truck lane cameras, tire pressure monitoring, fire suppression systems, and automatic greasing systems.

Darryn Scheepers, EMEA Sales Director at Konecranes Port Solutions, emphasized the broader industry trend toward zero-emission operations. “Termavi’s decision to invest in our hybrid RTGs reflects the container handling industry’s ongoing shift towards zero tailpipe operations. With these cranes, Termavi gets greater efficiency, improved safety, and a future-ready solution that supports their long-term operational goals,” he noted.

This contract falls under Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, which focuses on reducing carbon footprints while maximizing environmental benefits. The company continues to develop solutions that range from diesel optimization to full electrification, ensuring port operators have scalable and sustainable options for modernizing their fleets.

With ports worldwide facing increasing pressure to decarbonize, Termavi’s investment signals a shift toward a more sustainable future in container handling. By integrating cutting-edge technology with eco-friendly initiatives, the company is not only improving efficiency but also setting an example for other terminals seeking to reduce their environmental impact.
