Total Movements Delivers Two 643 MT Coke Drums for Major Indian Refinery

Total Movements has completed the transport of two oversized coke drums, each weighing 643 metric tons, for a leading refinery in India. The multimodal movement covered over 10,200 freight tons (FRT) and required end-to-end planning across road, barge, and inland delivery.

The cargo began its journey at the supplier’s factory, where both drums were transported by road to the nearest jetty. From there, the equipment was rolled onto a barge, shipped to the closest port near the refinery, and then delivered inland to the site for foundation placement.

Navigating Weather, Infrastructure, and Tidal Limits

The project was carried out during heavy monsoon rainfall, which forced strict adherence to safety procedures. Tide constraints at both the loading and receiving ports added further challenges, requiring precise scheduling to align vessel movements with narrow operational windows.

Marine Warranty Surveyor (MWS) approvals were obtained for the sea leg of the operation, ensuring compliance with international safety standards. The road transport segment faced difficulties typical of over-dimensional cargo in India, including weak infrastructure and restrictions on large cargo movement through certain regions.

Coordinated Execution

The project required close coordination between marine, port, and inland logistics teams to meet deadlines despite the obstacles. According to Total Movements, the execution was completed smoothly and within the committed timeframe, with credit given to the refinery client and all stakeholders who supported the operation.

The handling of these coke drums underscores the ongoing complexity of moving oversized refinery components in India, where weather, infrastructure, and regulatory barriers continue to test logistics providers managing such heavy-lift movements.
