Tschudi Logistics has once again proven its expertise by successfully delivering Valmet Tissue’s largest Yankee dryer, a massive piece of equipment measuring 22 feet in diameter and weighing 206 tons. This project was not just about moving cargo—it was a logistical masterpiece, requiring months of planning, collaboration with numerous suppliers, and the dedication of a skilled team.
A Journey of Precision and Expertise
The project kicked off in early September in Karlstad, Sweden. With operational challenges in Lake Vänern, Tschudi’s team employed a barge for the initial roll-on loading, showcasing their innovative approach. From there, the Yankee dryer began its multi-stage journey, crossing international borders and utilizing various transport methods.
The level of coordination required for this operation was extraordinary. Every supplier involved was selected for their specific capabilities, ensuring the seamless execution of this complex logistical puzzle. Tschudi’s team closely monitored every phase, ensuring that the project stayed on course.
Transshipment Challenges
One of the most demanding aspects of this operation occurred in Grenaa, Denmark. The Yankee dryer was transshipped using a twin-lift operation—no small feat given its size and weight. From there, it was loaded onto a coaster vessel for the next leg of the journey to Le Havre, France.
The success of this phase was due to the flawless coordination between the various teams involved. The high level of communication and precision allowed the dryer to be transferred safely and efficiently onto the vessel.
Navigating the River Seine
From Le Havre, the Yankee dryer embarked on a barge journey down the River Seine, passing through the heart of Paris en route to Corbeil. There, it was carefully lifted onto a trailer for the final 115-kilometer road journey to ICT Papermill in Pannes.
The road journey was no less challenging. The 10-day trip included crossing bridges via specially constructed flyover ramps and using a Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) to navigate particularly difficult sections. Every obstacle was meticulously planned for, with Tschudi’s project managers overseeing each stage.
Final Destination: ICT Papermill
After 35 days of travel, the Yankee dryer arrived at ICT Papermill in Pannes on the evening of October 10th. Despite the numerous complexities, the dryer was delivered in perfect condition and on time, showcasing the exceptional planning and execution by Tschudi Logistics.
This project serves as a prime example of Tschudi’s ability to handle intricate logistics tasks, no matter the size or scale. Their commitment to precision and innovation was evident at every turn, from the seamless transshipments to the on-ground execution of each logistical challenge.
