TWD Supports Foundation Installation as Fengmiao Offshore Wind Farm Enters Piling Phase

Work has begun offshore at Taiwan’s Fengmiao wind farm, with pin pile installation now underway for what will become one of the country’s largest offshore renewable energy projects.

The start of offshore foundation works marks a key milestone for the 500 MW development, which is being developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and installed by CDWE. Once completed, the project will feature 33 jacket foundations supporting 15 MW turbines supplied by Vestas, providing renewable power to corporate energy buyers in Taiwan.

Largest Pre Piling Template Deployed

As installation activities move offshore, a pre piling template designed through collaboration between TWD and CDWE is being deployed in the field. According to TWD, the structure represents the largest pre piling template the company has worked on to date.

The engineering process began during the early stages of the project, allowing installation requirements to be incorporated before offshore construction commenced. Early involvement can often determine whether a project proceeds smoothly or faces delays later. In offshore wind construction, where vessel time and weather windows are critical, addressing installation challenges upfront can make a significant difference.

The template has been designed with advanced levelling capabilities and retractable shims. These features allow offshore crews to accurately position and adjust the structure during operations while maintaining pile alignment requirements.

Supporting Foundation Installation

The pre piling template plays a central role in preparing the seabed and ensuring pin piles are installed within required tolerances before jacket foundations are placed.

For a project deploying 33 jacket foundations, precision is essential. Even small alignment deviations during the piling phase can create challenges further along the installation sequence. The template is intended to provide both stability and flexibility during offshore operations.

Industry observers often compare foundation installation to setting the foundations of a building. If the base is not correctly positioned, every subsequent construction phase becomes more complex and costly.

Broader Engineering Scope

Beyond the template design itself, TWD’s involvement in Fengmiao extends to several supporting engineering packages. These include pin pile seafastening systems, seafastening arrangements for the pre piling template, marine studies, and additional installation support items required during offshore execution.

With piling operations now underway, the project has moved from the engineering and planning stage into active offshore construction. The transition highlights the growing scale of offshore wind developments in Taiwan as developers continue to expand renewable energy capacity to meet long term energy demand.
