UECC Release Electric Vehicle Handling Guidelines

In the absence of any current IMO regulatory requirements, UECC have developed a set of electric vehicle guidelines.

“With the rapid increase of electric and hybrid vehicles, we already see new challenges in cargo handling. The additional weight of electric cars vs vessel payload is one future consideration, but we also must already consider the special characteristics of battery power, and specifically the potential fire risk on board of the vessels.

Ultimately the safety of our crew and vessels at sea is our paramount concern, and we know we will have to operate within future possible regulations and insurance requirements covering the shipping of electric vehicles. Maritime associations are assessing the SOC, so our initiative here now should be seen as a proactive reaching out to our customers for alignment on SOC best practice ahead of any regulatory measure.

In UECC we try to continually consider best practice in shipping and cargo handling to provide the best possible levels of damage-free handling and safety.”
