Havfram has been awarded a significant contract by Vattenfall and BASF for the Nordlicht offshore wind farm cluster, located in the German North Sea. This project represents a major step forward in Europe’s renewable energy efforts and further cements Havfram’s reputation as a key player in the offshore wind sector.
The Nordlicht wind farm zone is positioned 85 kilometers north of the island of Borkum and consists of two distinct sites: Nordlicht I and Nordlicht II. Nordlicht I boasts an expected capacity of 980 MW, while Nordlicht II is slated for 630 MW. Together, they form one of the most ambitious offshore wind projects currently under development in the region.
Under the terms of the contract, Havfram will handle the transportation and installation support for both sites, utilizing their expertise in offshore wind turbine installation. For Nordlicht I, Havfram will oversee the transport and installation of 68 Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, with operations scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027. The work on Nordlicht II involves the transport and installation support of 44 Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, starting in the summer of 2028.
Even Larsen, CEO of Havfram Wind, expressed his excitement about the new contract, stating, “For Havfram, this contract adds to an already strong backlog of projects. The contract, which we proudly have signed at the WindEnergy exhibition fair today, is a testament to the trust Vattenfall and BASF have in our capabilities in delivering excellent transport and installation services and reinforces our growing reputation within the offshore wind sector. We look forward to contributing to the success of this landmark project and advancing the transition to sustainable energy in Europe together with our partners Vattenfall and BASF.”
To carry out the installation for both Nordlicht I and II, Havfram plans to deploy one of its state-of-the-art wind turbine installation vessels, which is currently under construction. This vessel will be integral to ensuring the successful and efficient execution of the project, reinforcing Havfram’s position as a frontrunner in offshore wind farm installation.
Samira Barakat, Acting Head of Offshore Wind at Vattenfall, emphasized the importance of sustainability in this project, stating, “Vattenfall’s goal of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2040 requires that we also reduce greenhouse gas emissions along the entire value chain. This partnership with Havfram showcases our commitment to investing in assets that enable our wind farms to be developed in a sustainable manner. The use of a low-emission installation vessel is an important step on our path towards fossil freedom and we are pleased to work together with Havfram, a trusted partner that shares our strategic ambitions.”
This focus on sustainability aligns perfectly with BASF’s transformation toward renewable energy. Tobias Stäb, Director of BASF Renewable Energy GmbH, added, “With the signature of this contract, we are one step closer to the realization of the Nordlicht projects. The Nordlicht wind parks play an important role in BASF’s transformation towards carbon neutrality. The wind farms will supply our European chemical sites with renewable power and eventually enable BASF to increase production of low-carbon footprint chemical products. Thanks to the Havfram team for the collaboration!”
Once fully operational, Nordlicht I and II are expected to generate around 6 terawatt-hours (TWh) per year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 1.6 million German households, further solidifying the project’s importance in Europe’s renewable energy landscape.
This contract marks another milestone for Havfram, following a recent agreement with Luxcara for the transport and installation of wind turbines at the Waterkant offshore wind farm, also in the German North Sea. These consecutive contracts demonstrate Havfram’s expanding influence and capability in the growing offshore wind energy sector.
