Wärtsilä and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions have taken a major step forward in their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 30 September 2024. This agreement will enable the two companies to offer enhanced engine and propulsion services, specifically tailored for vessels requiring maintenance, repairs, or retrofits. The MoU ensures that shipowners calling at Qatar Shipyard’s facilities will receive top-tier service support, leveraging Wärtsilä’s extensive expertise in 2-stroke and 4-stroke engine technology.
Speaking at the signing event, Jos J.A.A. Goris, CEO of Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, emphasized the importance of this partnership. He noted, “This agreement with Wärtsilä enhances our technical capability, enabling us to provide a specialized suite of engine and propulsion solutions to serve our local and international clients more efficiently and safely.”
The scope of this collaboration includes a wide range of services such as maintenance, eco-friendly upgrades, and advanced reconditioning technologies. In line with the maritime industry’s decarbonization goals, the MoU also covers retrofit projects that target sustainability, including radical de-rating services for 2-stroke engines and dual-fuel conversions. The agreement also focuses on engineering services and training initiatives, utilizing Wärtsilä’s Land and Sea Academy to elevate technical skills in both organizations.
Another critical aspect of the MoU is its emphasis on helping shipowners and operators navigate their options for decarbonizing their fleets. This includes conducting feasibility studies on sustainable fuel conversions and hybrid propulsion solutions—key areas of focus for the future of shipping.
The partnership will especially benefit owners of modern LNGC carriers, which feature advanced dual-fuel 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. By tapping into Wärtsilä’s renowned marine maintenance expertise, Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions will be able to offer even better support for these technologically complex vessels. This positions the shipyard as a go-to destination for high-quality service.
Stefan Wiik, Wärtsilä’s Vice President for Parts and Field Service, highlighted the importance of such partnerships in a rapidly evolving industry. “Shipping is transitioning to more efficient and sustainable operations, and collaboration is crucial. This agreement with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions strengthens our ability to deliver premium services to shipowners and operators,” Wiik commented.
This MoU not only strengthens the existing relationship between Wärtsilä and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions but also reinforces Qatar Shipyard’s role as a premier service hub. Located within the prestigious Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma shipyard complex, the shipyard’s world-class facilities are now poised to provide even greater value to local and international maritime clients, thanks to this strategic partnership.
