Wärtsilä Takes Lead in Developing Singapore’s Next-Gen Vessel Traffic Management System

Wärtsilä has secured a pivotal role in the development of Singapore’s Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System (NGVTMS) after being awarded the prototyping tender by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This groundbreaking initiative is poised to revolutionize maritime safety and operational efficiency in one of the world’s busiest ports. The order, reflecting Wärtsilä’s commitment to maritime innovation, was officially booked in the third quarter of 2024.

As Singapore continues to assert itself as a leading global maritime hub, increasing port traffic calls for more sophisticated and proactive management solutions. In response, MPA is spearheading a digital transformation by introducing AI-driven tools to enhance navigational safety and optimize port efficiency. Following a rigorous assessment process, Wärtsilä was selected in April 2024, alongside other global leaders, to participate in this ambitious project.

David Foo, Assistant Chief Executive (Ops-Tech) at MPA, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “MPA is committed to the maritime industry’s digital transformation and green transition by leveraging cutting-edge technology and working with like-minded partners to enhance the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of port operations.” He further noted that Wärtsilä’s innovative solutions and profound industry expertise position it as a vital contributor to this project.

Over the next 15 months, Wärtsilä will collaborate closely with MPA at the Maritime Innovation Lab 2.0 to develop a system based on an open architecture. This advanced system will incorporate cutting-edge features, such as data analytics for identifying traffic hotspots and machine learning algorithms designed to predict potential collisions. Such capabilities will empower vessel traffic officers to manage increased traffic volumes and complex maritime scenarios with greater safety and efficiency.

Hannu Mäntymaa, Vice President for Voyage Services at Wärtsilä Marine, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for the project: “The NGVTMS initiative represents a collaborative venture aimed at redefining the future of maritime traffic management through advanced technology and shared expertise. Wärtsilä is honoured to bring our state-of-the-art solutions and deep industry knowledge to this transformative project, helping to establish new benchmarks in the field.”

Wärtsilä’s approach to this project highlights its extensive experience in the maritime domain, drawing upon its broad portfolio of advanced capabilities in alternative fuel engine management, fleet and port optimization, and state-of-the-art simulation and training technologies. This aligns with the company’s commitment to fostering sustainable societies through technological innovation.

Currently, Wärtsilä’s Vessel Traffic Management Systems are operational in over 55 countries, with more than 300 installations worldwide. The company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is closely aligned with Singapore’s vision of creating a smarter, greener maritime sector, solidifying Wärtsilä’s role as a key player in the global energy transition agenda.
