Van Oord and Betuwewind are advancing sustainable logistics with a new WattHub fast-charging plaza on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. The 5,000 m² site, set to open in summer 2025, will be the first on the Maasvlakte to provide 24/7 fast-charging services for lorries, heavy construction equipment, and potentially even inland and construction vessels.
This follows WattHub’s groundbreaking 2023 launch of the world’s first fast-charging plaza for heavy-duty vehicles in Geldermalsen. Now, with this second location in one of Europe’s busiest logistics hubs, the company is pushing forward its mission to offer smart, sustainable charging solutions across the Netherlands.
With thousands of trucks passing through the Maasvlakte daily, the demand for fast-charging infrastructure is growing. The plaza is strategically designed to cater to both freight transport and heavy construction, helping reduce emissions in key sectors. Additionally, discussions are underway to explore the potential use of this facility for inland shipping vessels and maritime construction projects, further broadening its impact.
Carlos Mollet, Commercial Director of Dredging & Infra at Van Oord, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “Climate goals, such as reducing emissions, pose major challenges for the logistics and construction sectors. Innovative solutions like these fast-charging plazas are crucial to meeting those challenges. This location also offers opportunities for the development of charging facilities for the maritime industry.”
For WattHub, this expansion aligns with its broader objective of making electric freight transport both feasible and practical for a wider audience. Gerben van den Berg, Director at WattHub, emphasized: “Maasvlakte is the logistics heart of the Netherlands. Realizing a fast-charging plaza here will be a big step forward in the electrification of freight transport.”
By positioning itself at the intersection of logistics, sustainability, and infrastructure, WattHub is addressing the pressing need for reliable charging solutions. As the demand for emissions-free transport grows, strategic projects like this are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of logistics and construction in the region.
