Wind Energy Ireland Highlights Safety and Innovation at Bord na Móna’s Derrinlough Wind Farm

Last month, members of Wind Energy Ireland’s Construction Safety Awareness working group had the unique opportunity to visit Bord na Móna’s Derrinlough Wind Farm in County Offaly. The site tour, set against a backdrop of clear skies and sunshine, was an eye-opener into the rigorous safety standards and advanced construction techniques employed at this state-of-the-art facility.

The visit was an engaging showcase of the collaborative spirit that defines the wind energy sector. With members of the working group observing firsthand, the tour highlighted the impressive quality of work carried out by several key players in the industry. Among them, BAM UK & Ireland stood out for its exceptional civil construction efforts. The meticulous attention to detail and high standards of workmanship were evident throughout the site.

H&MV Engineering also played a crucial role in the development of the Derrinlough Wind Farm. Their work on the electrical infrastructure and substation construction demonstrated the sophisticated technology and precision required to ensure the farm’s operational efficiency. This aspect of the project is vital, as it ensures the smooth integration of wind-generated power into the national grid.

Adding to the excitement, Vestas, renowned for its cutting-edge wind turbine technology, is responsible for the installation of the latest turbine models at the site. The advanced machinery and innovative solutions showcased during the tour underscore the industry’s commitment to harnessing wind power more effectively and sustainably.

The visit was not just an opportunity to see the technology and construction up close but also to appreciate the robust health and safety measures in place. The team at Bord na Móna ensured that the working group was well-accommodated, with comprehensive inductions, refreshments, and a guided tour that offered insights into the day-to-day operations and challenges of running such a complex project.

Overall, the site tour was a testament to the high standards of collaboration and innovation driving the wind energy sector forward. The working group expressed their gratitude to all involved, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the teams that made the visit both informative and enjoyable.
