Windward Offshore Welcomes Marubeni Corporation as Strategic Shareholder

Hamburg-based offshore wind vessel specialist Windward Offshore has announced a significant milestone in its corporate development, with Marubeni Corporation joining as a 25.1% shareholder. The move marks a new chapter in Windward’s plans to expand its global footprint in the offshore wind sector.

The deal was finalized through a new equity raise by Windward Offshore, with Marubeni Corporation acquiring the stake via a wholly owned subsidiary. This strategic partnership strengthens Windward’s financial base and opens new commercial pathways, particularly in Japan and Europe, where Marubeni is already actively involved in offshore wind development.

The Japanese trading house, one of the nation’s well-established “sogo shosha,” brings to the table decades of experience in global energy infrastructure and project development. Its involvement is expected to boost Windward’s operational reach and commercial capabilities across global markets.

Yasutomo Miyake, General Manager of Marubeni’s Ship Project Department, highlighted the strategic alignment between the two companies, noting, “We are very excited to join Windward Offshore, a group of reliable and professional partners with a strong passion. We are confident that Marubeni’s global network will play an important role in the company’s growth and that our engagement will contribute to the development of a more sustainable society.”

The announcement comes on the heels of Windward’s recent financial and technical achievements, including securing a senior loan facility of up to EUR 182 million in late 2024 and the successful launch of its first CSOV, Windward Athens, on February 10th. The vessel is expected to be delivered in September 2025 and is the first in a fleet of four CSOVs currently under construction at VARD shipyards.

Bastian Hagebeuker, Managing Director of Windward Offshore, emphasized the importance of the partnership, saying, “We are proud to welcome Marubeni Corporation as a significant shareholder in Windward Offshore and we would like to express our gratitude to the entire Marubeni team for the excellent collaboration so far.”

With Marubeni now on board, Windward Offshore positions itself not just as a fleet operator but as an integrated offshore wind services company. The firm’s business model combines vessel operations with engineering, maintenance, and operational services, targeting the high-growth commissioning and maintenance segments of offshore wind development.

Dr. Benjamin Vordemfelde, also a Managing Director at Windward, underlined the broader strategic vision, noting that Marubeni’s expertise and financial strength will be vital as Windward Offshore builds out its portfolio and global presence in the offshore renewables supply chain.
