World’s First Ship-Based Marine Factory for CO₂ Capture Launched

AGOGO FPSO Named in Shanghai, Set for Angola Operations

COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry in Shanghai marked a milestone in offshore carbon capture with the naming of the AGOGO FPSO. The vessel, an ultra-large crude oil carrier transformed into a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit, is the first of its kind to incorporate a ship-based Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) system.

The modified 320,000-dwt FPSO will operate in Angola’s Block 15/06 West Hub, where it will produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day and store 1.6 million barrels. Its unique design and emission-reduction technologies have earned it recognition as one of the most environmentally friendly FPSOs in operation.

Pioneering Emission Reduction Technologies

AGOGO FPSO’s carbon capture system significantly reduces onboard greenhouse gas emissions. During its commissioning phase, it achieved a 27% reduction in CO₂ emissions by capturing gas turbine emissions. The vessel integrates advanced technologies, including electrification, automation, and digitalization, along with seawater turbine generators and steam generators.

By employing a hydrocarbon cargo tank inerting system and an integrated closed flare system, AGOGO FPSO is projected to cut CO₂ emissions by approximately 230,000 tons annually. This approach aligns with the growing push for low-carbon and sustainable energy production in offshore operations.

A New Era in Offshore Carbon Capture and Storage

AGOGO FPSO features a modular carbon capture system that intercepts CO₂ emissions at the source. The captured CO₂ is reinjected into subsea geological formations for either enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or long-term storage. Operating in deep-sea conditions, the vessel benefits from reduced transportation costs by directly depositing CO₂ into submarine layers, avoiding extensive pipeline networks.

The initiative underscores COSCO SHIPPING’s commitment to advancing green and digital intelligence strategies in offshore modification and construction. By integrating carbon capture technology into FPSOs, the industry moves toward more sustainable energy extraction while mitigating environmental impact.
