Boskalis Deploys Dredgers for Major LNG Terminal Expansion in Oman

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Boskalis has launched a large-scale dredging operation in Sohar, Oman, to facilitate the construction of a new LNG terminal. The company’s trailing suction hopper dredger Coastway has already begun removing approximately 4 million cubic meters of sand to create the necessary space within the existing SOHAR Port and Freezone.

With its compact width of 23 meters and shallow draft, Coastway is particularly suited for operations in the Gulf of Oman’s shallow waters. Recognizing the project’s scale, Boskalis has also mobilized a second trailing suction hopper dredger, Willem van Oranje, to accelerate progress. In the coming months, the backhoe dredger Colbart will join the operation, ensuring the port expansion stays on track.

The Sohar LNG terminal project is a key development for Oman’s growing energy sector. By expanding the port’s capabilities, authorities aim to enhance LNG-related infrastructure and improve the region’s position as a strategic energy hub. Sohar’s port already serves as a major logistics and industrial center, and this expansion is expected to strengthen its role in global LNG trade.

Boskalis, known for its expertise in dredging and marine infrastructure, has a long history of executing complex coastal and offshore projects. The company’s ability to deploy specialized dredgers tailored for the region’s unique conditions underscores its operational strength in delivering large-scale maritime solutions.

As work progresses, Boskalis remains focused on completing the dredging phase efficiently, ensuring the LNG terminal’s timely development. The expansion aligns with Oman’s broader economic objectives, supporting the country’s drive to enhance its port infrastructure and attract further investment in the energy sector.
