[Video] Fire Onboard Container Ship MV KMTC Shenzhen Brought Under Control

In a dramatic overnight operation, the fire that broke out onboard the container ship MV KMTC Shenzhen has been successfully controlled, thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department and other key agencies. The blaze, which ignited in the cargo area of the vessel, sent plumes of smoke billowing into the night sky near Pantai Acheh, Port Klang, on the evening of Aug 12.

Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail, the director of the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, reported that their firefighting teams reached the site at 1.38 am on Sunday, Aug 13. He lauded the collaborative response that involved multiple agencies, including the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), which played a crucial role in tackling the inferno. “With the assistance of other departments, including the MMEA, we managed to bring the fire under control at 3.33 am,” he stated.

The situation remained challenging as firemen encountered two onboard containers emitting smoke, one carrying general goods and the other containing resins that had suffered a leak. “We are still in the midst of stamping out the fire’s last embers via direct attack. We are also inspecting the containers and patching up any leak discovered,” Wan Md Razali elaborated. This thorough approach underscores the commitment to preventing any potential resurgence of the fire.

Immediate action was triggered upon receiving the distress call, with a Selangor MMEA Boat and tugboats from both Westport and Northport swiftly deployed to the scene. Water cannons from the tugboats were instrumental in containing the blaze before it could further escalate. Thankfully, all crew members were safely rescued without any reported injuries, emphasizing the paramount importance of their well-being in such emergencies.

As the authorities continue their meticulous assessment and efforts to secure the vessel, this incident serves as a testament to the effectiveness of a coordinated response in maritime emergencies. The rapid containment of the fire reflects the dedication and professionalism of the rescue teams involved.
