GEODIS Successfully Completes Massive Break Bulk Shipment in Colombia Using Antonov AN-124

Global logistics provider GEODIS has successfully executed a complex air cargo transport operation in Colombia, utilizing the colossal Antonov AN-124 aircraft. The venture involved 13 flights over seven days, delivering oversized thermocompressors weighing a total of 776 tons and measuring 4,455 cubic meters on behalf of a key client.

The intricacies of this just-in-time logistics operation became apparent when GEODIS faced unexpected challenges. Initially planning to transport the cargo via road through the La Orquídea Bridge in Boyacá, GEODIS had to swiftly adapt its strategy when the bridge collapsed in August 2023. The alternative solution involved air transport to ensure the timely completion of the urgent project.

This monumental task required meticulous planning and negotiation between GEODIS and Antonov. After evaluating various air charter options, the Antonov AN-124 emerged as the sole aircraft capable of accommodating the cargo’s dimensions and weight. The planning process included overcoming challenges such as the limited availability of the aircraft amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Antonov’s primary focus on humanitarian aid.

Carlos Palacios, Manager Director of GEODIS in Colombia, remarked, “With 13 total flights, including a long international journey and 12 domestic trips, this unprecedented operation faced consistent challenges to overcome. Despite the complexities, our team at GEODIS and our collaborators—including Antonov, the Colombian Air Force, and the individual airports involved—successfully came together to keep essential materials moving across the country at a critical time for our client’s operations.”

Securing the Antonov AN-124 was just the beginning; GEODIS meticulously evaluated and selected Barranquilla (AOL) and Apiay (AOD) airports in Colombia based on technical conditions conducive to handling such a massive aircraft. In Apiay, a military base for the Colombian Aerospace Force, GEODIS conducted a detailed study to ensure seamless operations, considering factors such as landing and takeoff maneuvers, aircraft positioning to avoid disrupting military operations, fuel supply capacity, and the availability of alternate facilities during ground time.

Given the aircraft’s payload limitations, GEODIS orchestrated the movement of the cargo over 12 domestic flights, despite the Antonov AN-124’s 100-ton capacity, accepting a maximum payload of 65 tons for landing in Apiay. Adjustments to flight plans, load configurations, and even modifications like removing crates and stairs were made in collaboration with Antonov to ensure the success of this extraordinary operation.

Carlos Palacios emphasized, “Given the constant changes, urgency of the timeline, and sensitive nature of the cargo, this project marks one of the biggest accomplishments for our GEODIS in Colombia team. Together with our collaborators, we proved that with flexibility and world-class talent, we can overcome extreme challenges and execute exceptional air operations on behalf of our clients.”
