Pipe Rack Modules Arrive as Woodfibre LNG Construction Advances

Construction activity at the Woodfibre LNG site in British Columbia continues to gain momentum, with the arrival of the first seven prefabricated pipe rack modules and ongoing foundational work marking key milestones in the project’s latest phase.

The modules, delivered in May, were offloaded and positioned on-site using Mammoet Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT), a specialized logistics solution designed to handle extremely heavy and oversized components with millimeter-level precision. These SPMTs, equipped with numerous independently steerable wheels, are critical in transporting large industrial elements like LNG modules from vessels to their final positions at the site.

Current work at the Woodfibre LNG project encompasses backfilling, grading, concrete pouring, and rock scaling, along with the installation of onshore casings for the floating storage tank’s mooring system. These operations are taking place in tandem with strict environmental monitoring and control practices.

Marine Readiness and Environmental Oversight

To prepare for the upcoming marine construction window, the project team has conducted spill prevention and response drills, a proactive move reflecting the site’s sensitivity and complex logistics. Further training sessions are scheduled, to be delivered by Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC), ensuring all marine contractors are fully equipped to operate within environmental safety parameters.

Environmental monitoring is a continuous process. Under the supervision of a Qualified Environmental Professional, the site carries out daily bird monitoring as well as amphibian exclusion and salvage operations. These efforts aim to protect local biodiversity throughout the construction phase.

Adding another layer of environmental diligence, a full-time wildlife monitor is stationed on-site to manage potential interactions with bear populations in the area. When bears approach active zones, all work is immediately suspended until the animals have safely moved on, prioritizing both worker and wildlife safety.

Night Operations and Noise Management

Given the scope and timeline of the project, some activities have been granted a noise exemption variance by the District of Squamish. This permit allows specific construction tasks—such as formwork, concrete pouring, and essential site maintenance—to continue beyond standard bylaw hours.

To address community concerns, noise monitoring systems remain operational at Britannia and the Squamish harbour, providing data to ensure compliance and inform mitigation strategies if necessary.

Foundation Work Underway for LNG Equipment

On the ground, construction teams continue to focus on laying the foundation for LNG processing infrastructure. The M02 foundation is progressing steadily, supporting the structural base for key processing equipment to follow.

With the arrival of the pipe rack modules, site logistics will intensify. These steel frameworks, designed to carry piping and cables, are central to the plant’s modular construction approach. Prefabrication and modular assembly reduce the need for extensive on-site fabrication, minimizing environmental impact and compressing the project timeline.

These developments mark a significant shift from preliminary site work to core construction activities, underscoring the transition from groundwork to tangible infrastructure.

As the construction window for in-water work approaches, both logistical coordination and environmental compliance will remain in sharp focus. With daily oversight from environmental specialists, the project continues to advance under the lens of regulatory scrutiny and industry best practices.
