Royal T Shipyards has marked another milestone in its long history of shipbuilding with the christening of the 5,050 dwt MV SUEVE in Gijón, Spain. The vessel, part of the Salmo series, was delivered earlier this month to shipowner Navinorte/G. Junquera Marítima and formally christened at the Port of El Musel on 11 September 2025.

The christening ceremony underscored the shipyard’s collaboration with the Spanish owner and its focus on sustainable vessel design. Attendees included representatives of Navinorte/G. Junquera Marítima, Royal T Shipyards, Alta Shipbrokers, Friday&Co Shipbrokers, as well as family members and maritime industry partners.

From Delivery to Ceremony

The MV SUEVE was officially delivered on 4 September in the Netherlands before sailing to Spain for the christening. This sequence of events highlighted the coordinated efforts between builder and owner, ensuring the vessel entered service with both operational readiness and ceremonial recognition.

Efficiency at Sea

Built with a diesel-electric propulsion system, MV SUEVE combines advanced shipbuilding with smart automation. The automation system provides readouts and voyage analysis, giving the operator better insights into performance and energy use. The vessel’s design improves maneuverability while reducing fuel consumption, contributing directly to lower emissions.

“The christening of MV SUEVE is a proud moment for our team and for our partnership with Navinorte,” said Thecla Bodewes, CEO of Royal T Shipyards. “With the Salmo series, we aim to combine proven performance with forward-looking technology, ensuring real value for both shipowners and the environment.”

Proven During Sea Trials

The vessel measures 87.30 meters in length, 13.70 meters in beam, and 6.30 meters in draught. During recent sea trials in the North Sea, MV SUEVE demonstrated outstanding maneuverability and recorded notably low fuel consumption.

Cargo capacity is provided through a single box-shaped hold of 5,915 m³, measuring 65.40 x 11.24 x 8.46 meters. This configuration gives the vessel operational flexibility across dry cargo segments.

Tradition and Innovation

The christening at El Musel followed long-standing maritime tradition, with the vessel’s godmother performing the naming act. While steeped in ceremony, the event also reflected the modern approach driving Royal T Shipyards’ Salmo series – a balance between tradition and innovation.

The presence of brokers, partners, and maritime professionals at the ceremony reinforced the importance of collaboration in today’s short sea shipping sector.

Shared Commitment

For Navinorte, a company founded in 1986 as part of G. Junquera Marítima, the MV SUEVE adds to a fleet of multi-purpose dry cargo vessels used in tramp shipping. The company emphasizes flexible planning, efficient cargo handling, and safety standards across its operations.

For Royal T Shipyards, headquartered in Kampen, the Netherlands, the christening continues a long line of projects combining family tradition with modern maritime technologies. With more than 200 newbuilds completed, the yard has become known for its sustainable designs and strong partnerships with regional and international owners.

The christening of MV SUEVE highlights the joint effort of both companies to bring efficient and future-ready ships into the short sea market, underlining their commitment to lower emissions and smarter operations.
